Essaouira restaurants: the top 10 places to eat in 2025
By Mogador Conciergerie · 30 September 2025 · 14 min read

One step into Essaouira’s sandy lanes is enough to be caught by the heady scent of cumin, grilled fish and warm bread. Around every corner of the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, colourful doors open onto a mosaic of flavours.
Here, you do not go to a restaurant just to eat: you sit down at the table to feel the soul of the city, this ‘pearl of the Atlantic’ where Moroccan traditions, sea winds and cosmopolitan influences meet. Between the cries of the gulls, the fishermen at the port and the smell of spices drifting through the air, Essaouira is something you live as much as you taste.
In this article, we take you to discover the best tables in Essaouira in 2025, a selection refined over time, through local recommendations and the experiences of travellers who stayed with Mogador Conciergerie.
Why eating in Essaouira is a unique experience
A city of sea, tradition and culinary creativity
Essaouira is not just a postcard backdrop swept by the trade winds. It is a city that lives to the rhythm of taste. Here, the sea is never far away, and you find it on every plate. Every day, the fishermen land their catch at the port from dawn, bringing in sardines, sea bream and spiny lobsters still quivering.
The local cook does not follow fashions; he follows the tide. In the medina, the stalls compete with their aromas and recipes, mixing age-old techniques with modern daring. This city of ocean blue and ochre stone is an open-air table where the authentic and the unexpected meet.
And this subtle marriage of tradition and creativity is found nowhere else in Morocco.
A diversity of influences: Berber, Andalusian, French, Mediterranean
Essaouira is a crossroads. For centuries, it has welcomed travellers, artists and seafarers. That openness can literally be tasted. On the plate, Berber influences blend with Andalusian scents, French touches and Mediterranean inspiration. A tagine may sit alongside a reinvented ceviche, while home-made bread comes out of the oven next to a goat’s cheese matured in the region.
You will find a seafood pastilla just as easily as a citrus salad with rosemary. Nothing is set in stone here, except the wish to welcome guests well. It is this skilful blend that gives Souiri cooking its character, at once free and refined.
In 2023, more than 38% of restaurants in the medina offered a fusion menu, according to data from the Marrakech-Safi Regional Tourism Centre. A trend that is rising sharply.
Seafood, argan, spices: a local richness without equal
Essaouira’s terroir has a voice all its own. Argan oil, produced in the region’s women’s cooperatives, is more than a condiment: it is a heritage. It enhances a fish as well as a dessert. The spices, for their part, never mask; they reveal. Saffron, cumin, ras el hanout… here, every grain has a story.
And of course, the sea remains the star. The fish is grilled, simmered, fried, sometimes simply laid on a bed of lemon and herbs from the souk. In markets such as Bab Doukkala, you can still choose your fish and have it grilled on the spot. An experience as simple as it is delicious, impossible to reproduce elsewhere. In Essaouira, culinary richness is a living ecosystem, rooted in earth and salt.
How we selected the 10 best restaurants in Essaouira
Selection criteria: quality, reviews, customer experience, atmosphere
Choosing 10 restaurants from more than 200 listed establishments in Essaouira is not a random exercise. At Mogador Conciergerie, we based our selection on four pillars: the quality of the produce, the consistency of the dishes served, the welcome, and the overall atmosphere of the place.
A good meal is not measured only by how well the fish is cooked: it lives in the waiter’s smile, in the music that accompanies dinner, in a setting that makes you want to come back. We excluded restaurants whose quality drops in high season, and favoured those that stay consistent all year round.
We already apply this rigour to our concierge services, and it also guides our food recommendations.
Cross-checked sources: customer reviews, local recommendations, tests on the spot
Every restaurant in our top 10 has been tested at least twice by our teams or by guests in our partner villas. We also analysed more than 1,200 customer reviews on platforms such as Google, TripAdvisor and TheFork, focusing on the most recent (2024–2025).
We compared these reviews with feedback from Souiri residents, local chefs and trusted partners. The result: a selection that is neither dictated by online popularity nor influenced by sponsored rankings.
It is based on real experience and good word of mouth, like any sound advice you would give a friend passing through.
A top 10 updated for 2025
Plenty of lists circulate online, but few are genuinely kept up to date. Essaouira moves fast: some restaurants close, others change chef or rethink their menu. Our 2025 ranking is 100% up to date.
Every address has been revisited or validated within the last six months. We deliberately left out places whose quality is slipping or those too geared towards the ‘quick tourist’ with no real substance. It is a top 10 designed to last, but above all to please true food lovers.
And because we are based locally in Essaouira, we have a front-row seat for spotting the good tables on the rise… or those no longer living up to their promise.

Practical tips for eating well in Essaouira
When to book your restaurant
Essaouira keeps its easy-going pace, but some restaurants fill up faster than you might think. Between April and October, the city sees a peak in tourist numbers, with bookings up 42% according to the CRT Marrakech-Safi (2024). For high-end tables such as La Table by Madada or Umia, booking 24 to 48 hours ahead is strongly recommended, especially for a weekend dinner.
In low season, most places can be visited without a booking, but it is always better to call ahead, especially if there are more than two of you.
At Mogador Conciergerie, we offer a priority booking service for our villa guests, sparing you any unpleasant surprises.
Average budget per meal
Eating well in Essaouira is possible on any budget. Allow 60 to 90 MAD for a quick lunch at a snack bar or from a street-food stall (around €5 to €8). A full meal in a good restaurant in the medina costs between 150 and 250 MAD per person, drink included (€14 to €22).
For a gourmet experience, budget around 400 to 600 MAD (€35 to €55), particularly in places such as Les Alizés Mogador. Prices remain competitive compared with other Moroccan cities, with excellent value for money.
And if you are staying in one of our villas, we can arrange a private chef for a tailor-made meal at home.
Should you leave a tip?
Yes, tipping is part of the etiquette in Essaouira. It is never compulsory, but always appreciated. For decent service, a gesture of 5 to 10% is generally well received.
In more touristy or upmarket places, rounding up the bill or leaving 20 to 30 MAD (around €2 to €3) is common practice. In snack bars or cafés, 5 to 10 MAD is enough. Tipping here is not automatic: it mainly rewards the quality of the welcome, and heaven knows the service in Essaouira is often warm.
When you book through our concierge service, we make sure to recommend places where the welcome is as carefully tended as the cooking.
Dishes not to miss in Essaouira
Some dishes tell the story of Essaouira better than a thousand brochures. Monkfish tagine with market vegetables, grouper couscous and seafood pastilla are among the essential local specialities.
Grilled sardines, simple but always fresh, are eaten at the port or on the beach. Do not miss the fish soup, ‘harira bidaouia’, reinterpreted with an ocean twist. For something sweet, try cornes de gazelle or the milk pastilla served in a handful of houses in the medina.
Culinary argan oil, often used as a finishing touch, gives many dishes a unique note. If you would like a real immersion, Mogador Conciergerie can organise a cooking workshop for you with a local female chef.
6. Alternatives: street food, cafés and local markets
Street-food spots to discover
Essaouira’s port remains the liveliest place for a bite on the go. From late morning, the little stalls spring into action: fried calamari, sardine skewers, fish grilled to order.
For an authentic experience, head to the Bab Doukkala fish market. You choose, it is weighed, it is grilled. Simple, good, inexpensive. In 2024, these stalls welcomed an average of 800 visitors a day, according to figures from the municipality.
A drink on a rooftop
Essaouira is also to be enjoyed from above. The rooftop at Salut Maroc! offers one of the finest views of the ocean, with a menu mixing cocktails and light dishes.
For a more laid-back mood, head to the rooftop at Taros: lounge music, golden light at sunset and a selection of seafood-led tapas. Perfect places to make the evening last or for an aperitif up high.
Eating at the market: freshly grilled fish
Essaouira’s municipal market remains a well-kept secret. Every morning, seafood arrives straight from the port. Buy your fresh fish, then head to one of the small restaurants nearby, which will cook it for you.
A few dirhams later, you are sitting down to a simple, generous dish, served with warm bread and preserved lemon. A tradition that few coastal towns have managed to keep with such authenticity.
Essaouira is a city to eat as much as to visit
Its cooking, between land and sea, wins over curious travellers and gourmets alike. Through its restaurants, its markets and its rooftops, it offers a culinary experience as rich as it is varied. From refined gastronomy to tasty street food, everyone finds something for their plate.
At Mogador Conciergerie, we believe that eating well is also a way of discovering. So let yourself be guided, try, taste, share… and above all, tell us about your discoveries.
